Our Chapter One

Cormorant & Quill opened on Sydney Street in the autumn of 2009 with a few hundred books, a borrowed espresso machine, and a conviction that Brighton deserved an independent bookshop built on conversation, not algorithms. We were — and remain — a family affair.

Sixteen years later, those few hundred books have become thousands. The borrowed machine has been replaced (twice). The poetry shelf that started as a single row has grown into one of the largest independent poetry collections outside London. But the principle hasn't changed: every book on every shelf was chosen by someone who read it and loved it, and every customer who asks for a recommendation will get one that was picked just for them.

We specialise in literary fiction, nature writing, and poetry — the three streams that feed everything we do. Alongside the books, our reading café serves single-origin coffee from Assembly Roasters and pastries from Flint Bakery, and our weekly programme of author talks, poetry open mics, and children's story hours has become a cornerstone of Brighton's North Laine community.

The Principles Behind the Shelves

Every book is read before it's shelved

We don't stock from catalogue descriptions or bestseller lists. Someone on our team has read every title we carry. If we can't tell you why it matters, it doesn't belong on the shelf.

Community over commerce

A bookshop is a public room. Our events are priced to include, our children's story hour is free, and our door is open to anyone who wants to sit and read — whether or not they buy a thing.

Independent means something

We partner with local makers — Assembly Roasters for our coffee, Flint Bakery for our pastries, small presses for our shelves. Independence is a network, not a solo act.

The slow browse matters

We'll never rush you to the checkout. The best discoveries happen when you're not looking for anything in particular — and a good bookshop should give you the space to let that happen.

A Community of Readers

The Margin is our newsletter — book recommendations, event announcements, and occasional notes from behind the counter. It started as a way to let regulars know what was new on the shelves and has grown into a community of 2,400 readers who trust us to point them toward something worth their time.

It arrives when we have something worth saying, never more than twice a month. No algorithms, no affiliate links — just a bookseller writing to readers about books.
