The warm, book-filled interior of Cormorant and Quill bookshop on Sydney Street, Brighton

Sydney Street, North Laine — since 2009

Where Every Page Matters

An independent bookshop and reading café in the heart of Brighton's North Laine. Literary fiction, nature writing, and one of the largest independent poetry collections outside London — alongside single-origin coffee and pastries worth lingering over.

What We're Recommending This Week

Our team picks what belongs on your bedside table — from debut fiction to rediscovered verse. Every book here has been read, argued over, and loved by someone behind the counter.

A Family of Readers

We opened the doors on Sydney Street in 2009 with a few hundred books and a conviction that Brighton deserved an independent bookshop built on conversation, not algorithms. Sixteen years later, we're still here — still family-run, still choosing every title by hand.

Our shelves hold one of the largest independent poetry collections outside London, alongside a carefully curated range of literary fiction and nature writing. We know our stock because we've read it. Ask us for a recommendation — it's our favourite part of the job.

A Cup and a Chapter

Single-origin coffee from Assembly Roasters, pastries from Flint Bakery, and a corner where the reading hour stretches on. Our café sits at the heart of the shop — pull up a chair, order a flat white, and stay as long as the story holds you.

Kind Words from Our Readers

They recommended a book I'd never have found on my own and it became the novel I press into every friend's hands. That doesn't happen in a chain bookshop.

James K., Hove

My daughter learned to love reading in the children's corner at Cormorant & Quill. Now she reads to her own daughter there. Three generations of Saturday mornings.
